A GUIDE TO SKIP HIRE

You have waste to dispose of….You order a skip, fill it up and the skip is then taken away, job done. Surely a very simple and painless process?

Skip hire CAN be easy, and it SHOULD be easy – but through our 15 years experience this has proven to not always be the case! By reading this brief guide you can ensure that all legal requirements are met and you get the most out of your skip hire.

CHOOSING THE BEST SKIP SIZE

The most obvious advice we can give is that you need to establish exactly how big a skip you need. Below are our skip sizes and approximate measurements.

SKIP SIZES

available from Ludlow Skip Hire

 Mini - 2cu.yd

This type of skip is commonly known as a ‘mini skip’ it is designed for general household, garden and builders’ waste. Ideal for small domestic jobs.

Dimensions: 2-yard skip are: 5ft (1.52m) long x 4ft (1.22m) wide x 3ft (0.91m) high.

Holds approx 20 bin bags.

Midi - 4cu.yd

A 4 yard small skip is perfect if you live in the centre of town. Its size makes it a convenient choice for placing in a street or on a small driveway. One thing to note is, it is small but our truck will still require a good amount of room to be able to manoeuvre it into place.

Dimensions: 4-yard skip are: 7ft (2.13m) Long x 5ft (1.52m) Wide x 3ft (0.91m) High.

Holds approx 40 bin bags.

Small Builders - 6cu.yd

A 6 yard skip is probably the most common type. This is a builders skip and is used by a large majority of construction workers to dispose of rubble and general building materials.

Dimensions: 6-yard skip are: 10ft (2.29m) Long x 5ft (1.52m) Wide x 4ft (1.07m) High.

Large Builders - 8cu.yd

This type of skip is best suited for clear outs of properties and major renovations. All types of commercial, industrial and domestic use. Ideal for builders’ rubble, soil and concrete.

Dimensions: 8-yard Medium are: 12ft (3.66m) Long x 6ft (1.83m) Wide x 4.5ft (1.37m) High.

We also have 14 cu.yd skips available.

Please Note sizes vary between manufacturers

FILLING A SKIP

When filling your skip you can only load it level with the top of the skip itself. This is a legal requirement. It is against the law for our drivers to carry skips loaded beyond this point on highways. Likewise, using boards around the side of the skip in an attempt to increase its capacity is illegal.

SITING THE SKIP

Ideally you will have privately owned property for the skip to be sited on, meaning driveway, hard-standing or private owned garden.

If you do not have your own private property on which to keep the skip, or there is not enough access for the skip lorry, it leaves you with the option of placing the skip on the road or grass verge outside the property. In order to do this your local council must first give permission. In most cases local councils will only allow us to apply for the permits on your behalf. Inevitably all councils charge for the privilege and this charge varies dependent on which county you are in.

Permits can take up to 7 days to obtain.

Please note: the smaller skips can/will be delivered on our smaller lorry so a minimum of 7’ 7 is required for access. Builders Skips when full will require our larger lorry so 10’ access is required.

WAIT & LOAD

Wait and load is a service we offer at no extra cost. When the driver delivers the skip, he will then wait for up to 30 minutes while you fill the skip. He will then take it away, this eliminates the need to obtain a permit and it is also ideal if you don’t want a skip sat outside your house.

GENERAL SKIP RESTRICTIONS

Certain types of waste CANNOT be placed in general waste skips under any circumstances.

These include:

  • Asbestos Toxic Material that contains Hazardous Waste
  • Paints, Liquids or Sludge (Oil)
  • Fluorescent Tubes
  • Pressurised Containers/Gas Cylinders
  • No dead or live animals
  • NO ASH or Fires

We also request that Plasterboard is kept separate as it can not go to Landfill. It is a legal requirement that Plasterboard is bagged and segregated from general waste. If plasterboard is found to not be segregated or bagged from general waste, the load will be rejected and returned to site.

We do not accept Creosote coated wood/timbers i.e. railway sleepers/telegraph poles
